A significant cold snap is forecast to affect southeast Louisiana beginning this weekend and continuing into early next week. Regional meteorologists report that a strong cold front will move into southern Louisiana, bringing temperatures near or below freezing during the overnight hours. This change comes on the heels of a larger winter weather pattern affecting much of the Southern United States as part of an active winter weather system this month.
While average lows in Houma and Terrebonne Parish in late January typically range in the upper 40s °F, sharp temperature drops with wind chill can make conditions feel significantly colder, especially at night. These conditions can pose health risks to anyone without reliable shelter or heating.

Warming Shelter Available at Dumas Auditorium
To support residents who may be without adequate heat or are vulnerable to the cold, Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government (TPCG) will open an overnight warming shelter at Dumas Auditorium (301 W. Tunnel Blvd, Houma, LA) on the coldest nights:
- Sunday, January 26: 6 PM – 9 AM
- Monday, January 27: 6 PM – 9 AM
The shelter will provide a safe, warm space overnight for those in need.
What You Should Bring
This shelter is intended to offer temporary overnight relief; staff will not be providing food or bedding. Residents should plan accordingly. Those planning to use the warming shelter are asked to bring their own personal items and supplies, including:
- Bedding (such as blankets, sleeping bags, or cots)
- Food and water
- Any medications and personal hygiene items
- Warm clothing and necessary personal necessities
WINTER WEATHER / SCHOOL CLOSURE
The School District will cancel school and close all offices this Monday, January 26, 2026. The District has 5 extra days built into the schedule, so they will use one of the 5 extra days as a make-up day.
Stay Safe, Stay Warm
Cold weather can be hard on vulnerable populations, including infants, elderly adults, people with health conditions, and those without reliable heating. Please take precautions:
- Dress in layers and cover exposed skin when outdoors.
- Keep pets inside or provide them with adequate warmth.
- Check on neighbors, especially older adults or those living alone.
- Insulate pipes where possible to prevent freezing.
For the most current weather forecast, residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and local weather providers. Your safety and well‑being are a top priority. Please prepare now and take advantage of available community resources during this period of cold weather.
